Connecting postgraduate subject experts with high school students for online academic tutoring.

Aristotle facilitates tutor booking, online lessons with an interactive whiteboard, and progress tracking.

This was my first project in the Google UX Design Certificate. It introduced me to the full UX scope using the design thinking process: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.

This was my first project in the Google UX Design Certificate. It introduced me to the full UX scope using the design thinking process: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.

The goal of this case study was to produce a high-fidelity prototype simulating the booking and tutor interaction flows.

PERSONAS

PERSONAS

Trisha Mehta

“I need a tutor to help me improve my academic marks to get into university, preferably someone who is mobile and can work with my busy after-school schedule.”

Home town: Durban

Family: Lives with parents and one younger sibling

Occupation: None

Trisha, a high school student aiming for a competitive university program, needs to improve her grades while managing a busy schedule. Her numerous extracurriculars leave little time for extra lessons, so she seeks a flexible, mobile solution to study during downtime between activities.

Goals

  • Improve academic marks

  • Get into competitive university programme

  • Balance her academics with extracurricular activities

Frustrations

  • Not achieving the marks she needs to apply for university

  • Too busy with extracurricular activities to focus on her school work

  • Feels anxious that she is falling behind in her school subjects

  • Doesn’t know where to turn to for academic help outside school

Isabel Marshall

"I need to be able to support myself financially during my demanding postgraduate degree."

Age: 26

Education: Master’s student at UCT

Home town: Johannesburg

Family: Lives with partner (programmer for a local startup)

Occupation: full-time student

Isabel, a full-time master’s student in science, struggles to balance studies with earning income. Grateful for her partner’s support, she still wants to contribute financially. She seeks a flexible way to leverage her expertise for extra income while managing her demanding, ever-changing schedule.

Goals

  • Earn income flexibly, by finding a way to make money that fits her unpredictable schedule.

  • Leverage her expertise by using her science knowledge and skills to generate income.

  • Balancing work and studies, ensuring work commitments don’t interfere with her demanding coursework.

  • Contribute financially by reducing reliance on her partner by earning her own income.

Frustrations

  • Lack of time: her full-time studies leave little room for a part-time job.

  • Inflexible work options, since traditional jobs don’t accommodate her unpredictable schedule.

  • Financial pressure: she wants to contribute financially but struggles to find suitable opportunities.

  • Underutilised expertise: she prefers work related to her field but finds few relevant options.

PROBLEM STATEMENTS

PROBLEM STATEMENTS

The Problem

Trisha is a busy high school student, who needs help improving her academic marks whilst navigating a busy extracurricular schedule because she needs to get into her dream university course.

Hypothesis

If Trisha can book online tuition classes whilst she’s on-the-go, then she can easily and efficiently get the academic help she needs whilst maintaining her busy extracurricular schedule.

Value Proposition

Aristotle allows academic experts to provide tuition at competitive rates to high-school students seeking academic help to get the grades they need for university entrance.

02 / IDEATION

USER FLOW

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

Information Architecture clarified screen organization and potential user flows within Aristotle’s user experience.

SKETCH + WIREFRAMING

SKETCH

I begin most design conceptualisation with analog sketch design to rapidly explore a breadth of ideas.

LOW-FIDELITY WIREFRAMES

The sketches were then converted to digital wireframes to refine selected ideas.

USABILITY TESTING

During the prototype phase, I conducted usability testing with a low-fidelity prototype and target users that matched the project's user characteristics from the Personas. Insights from this testing guided the development of the high-fidelity mockup and prototype.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
  1. How long does it take for a user to book a tutoring session with a subject-specific tutor?

FINDINGS

An affinity diagram was used to organise the qualitative findings:

This was the result of the SUS. It was expected, and motivated the need to improve the idea through design development:

INSIGHTS

In general, attention to text size and visual cues are needed to ensure users with visual impairments can easily identify navigation components. These additional actionable insights were derived from the study:

05 / LEARNINGS

KEY TAKEAWAYS
KEY TAKEAWAYS

I learned the UX design process through the design thinking method, acquired technical skills through working in Figma and enjoyed seeing a project from inception to hi-fidelity prototype.

NEXT STEPS

As this was a case study introducing me to user experience design, the scope of the project was limited to the main user flows. In future, I would like to expand the app’s design to explore the tutor-side of the user flow (managing students, earnings and bookings), looking at a tablet/iPad interface design for the tutor’s presentation mode, and incorporate another round of user testing to better understand how this user flow can work to its full potential.
